Star coronas

Hello,

i would like to ask if there are plans on improving the visualisation of star's corona

this means:
- multiple per each star type
- animated vs actual static

i made new corona texture based off work of czech astrophotographer Prof. DNDr. Miloslav Druckmüller CSc.
Texture: http://img.ie/ca9ba.png
Sources (forgot which one was it but some of the HD ones): http://www.zam.fme.vutbr.cz/~druck/Eclipse/index.htm

then do You have any plans for animated , dynamic, procedural activitiy on surface and above?

namely:
Coronal Loop, ongoing and some visible at any given point
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronal_loop

Solar flares as rare yet spectacular events as
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_flares

etc.

Hi.

Do you mean the solar corona or the lens flare affect? I think all features (animation etc) will be inplemented in the future. But now I have no time to do so:) I would like to first make a dynamic lens flares with correct occlusion by mountains. Implementing a true volumetric 3D model of solar corona is hard due to many narrow features in its structure. So I've simply made it as three orthogonal planes with the same texture. It's possible to use different textures for each plane, If I have them, I will include them in my next release. If you have more corona textures, please feel free to send them to me:)

Animation of surface is hard for current hardware. It is necessary to update each of the star's surface textures for each every frame. So it will lead to huge slowdown in perfomance. But I will experiment with this in the future (animated star surfaces and also cloud layers on planets).

Physically based simulation of magnetic activity in a stars' atmosphere and corona is impossible with modern hardware (in theory!) I think.

ofcourse the solar corona, i barely use the flares ... and that's something completely else to corona ...

and sent you email related to the everything smile

Wouldn't it be possible in animating the surface of the star by
creating something like a gif loop of the animation, rather than
trying to have the cpu calculate it? Obviously, it'd only be loaded
when viewing a star closeup, so shouldn't create much of a load since
only the currently viewed star would have it. Right?

This 'faking' might be easy to implement, but this would clash with procedural generation idea. Such simply animation will make all stars look identically and have small levels of detail, limited by resoltion of the animated texture.

Wait several months, while I test out a real-time update of procedurally generated textures, or even a real-time rendering of surface with the same procedural noise functions. Maybe modern hardware can handle it, so it may be possible to animate surfaces of stars and cloud layers of planets in real-time.

it would be really nice to have several corona suns models, is it planned in 0.96?
Someone more skilled than me ( not hard to find.. happy ) could do this 100X better..
various corona models :

EDIT:

lol, i'm one year late.. I hope that could help anyway.

Solaris, I love that first one (and especially that photograph, the eclipse from 2008. Wow!) I'm going to try it out right now smile

If you make them sharpest and less noisy, I'll include them in 0.96 and add code to procedurally assign a corona with a star.

Ok I will try it better soon.
Do the stars pole have to be on a vertical axe? like Dwarden did. or this isn't necessary?

These look splendid, I hope to see them in future versions of SE.

About animating the star's surface; would it be possible to actually have two models of the same star in the same location and make them rotate in different directions? That would give a sense of ''movement''. Dunno though, seems like it would affect performance alot and not look quite good. Just tossing out the idea biggrin

This would probably look messy. You would have the meshes of 2 stars moving through each other and it would look unnatural. But you can try it yourself, make 2 identical stars in SE, and give them different rotation parameters. Maybe you'll like the result.
