Would it be possible in a far future version of the sim to add a tab that would show you a text readout of the planet's atmosphere, crust, mantle, and core?

How it would work would be you would have a selection of atmosphere, crust, mantle, and core and clicking on one would tell you the average temperature, depth, and composition. For the Crust, mantle, and core it would also tell you if it is molten or solid.

Another idea is to show a 2D cutaway of the planet in the tab to give a visual representation of how thick or thin the crust, mantle, and core are.

At present, SpaceEngine doesn't model the interior structure of planets. But in the future I plan to do simulation of planetary system formation and its evolution, so data about core, mantle, crust may be available, and of course will display such planet info onscreen.

Ah that's cool. I look forward to when SE reaches that level. smile

Similarly, could you or will you be able to display the type of terrain on the surface? I'd really like to know what kind of materials the different surface textures represent. How much simulation is put into generating these textures in the current version?

Current version does not do a simulation. SE don't generate information about materials. As I say:

You do some amount of simulation for planetary textures, for example polar caps and the terminator around tidally locked planets. That's mostly what I was asking about. If textures on planets correspond to particular materials, such as frozen gas snow on colder planets, various types of regolith on selenas, etc, it would be cool to be able to identify them in-game.

Just something to keep in mind in the future, in addition to the interiors of planets.

Well, I have only several materials on planets: show water, rocks, sand, regolith, grass and forset. In the future I will of course add description for minerals.

It would be neat to show a 2d slice map of the planet as well, indicating where things are.
