Custom lines, markings and names

I'm loving the Space Engine. I found it via YouTube videos and have been playing with it all week. Keep up the great work.

I'm wondering if I can offer a suggestion. Would it be possible to implement a feature that allows one to draw or create lines, markings, or labels in space (e.g. lines between stars so as to mark constellations, or fictional boundary lines or spheres marking different regions of space; say you wanted to create a 3D version of something like this). I understand this may be beyond the scope of this project, but I thought it couldn't hurt to throw the idea out there. I really like the way the program labels stars and shows the orbits of planets. I also noticed that it is possible to add your own custom planets into the simulator. It seems like having the option to add custom labels and markings for whatever purpose might be doable as well.

That would be very cool.

I also want a feature where you can name any star you discover which adds it to the Find Menu and gives it a number designation in addition to your custom name.

Naming will be implemented in the online game. Subdividing of space I think is unnecessary - there are no edges in space...

I am sure it has been posted somewhere in this forum but since I can't find it and don't want to start a new thread: It would be at least really helpfull if we could put some sort of markers/points/spots/beacons on the stars/systems we've visited in order not to visit them again and again as we search in the chaos of the cosmos for planets like earth or for pure curiosity cool . Something similar like the game "Spore" if you know what I am talking about.

Subdividing of space shouldn't be ruled out IMO - it could be useful in order to designate charted/uncharted territories - obviously we should be able to deactivate it if we want to wink . Subdivision of space because of militirization/political bordering is a different aspect alltogether wink .

+1 for that idea smile

That requires the database and additional memory to store info and video memory for vbo for markers... And this database should really be limited in size...

Maybe you could make it write down every short RS code of a star system you visit in a small text file, then just cycle through that when you visit a star to see if you've been there, surely that shouldn't take too much space?

No, this will get very slow when the database grows. The database should be more optimized and use a very fast search algorithm, like octree and binary search in pre-sorted array.

BTW, you already have journey journal ("Tab" menu). It shows the objects that you've visited by autopilot. I can easily make markers that will show the locations of all journal entries in space, but only if I leave it limited in size (100-1000 entries).

journey journal

Ah, well you should make the journal actually change the name of the star/body if you name it using the journal then. So it actually shows up on the planet text when you click it, that would be cool. And make a little symbol by its name to mark that it's been discovered by you.

Because I would have to manually read through all my 50+ entries every time I visit a star to see if I've already seen it. cool
