Distribution of SpaceEngine

I notice that the only mirrors to Space Engine are on a couple of generic filesharing sites. These are not all that great; there are very low download limits for both of them, and downloads can often cease halfway through, forcing the user to re-download the file.

Torrents are good as far as reliability and speed go, assuming everyone seeds generously, but few people do. In addition, many lower-quality ISPs (in fact, *most* ISPs) will throttle users or disable service altogether for making use of P2P to download things, as it causes a lot more traffic and headaches for them.

The best option, then, is to find a better way to distribute the game than either of those. There's no hurt in leaving them in place for users who prefer them, though.

I would suggest a digital distribution platform. These are obviously good for distributing games, including ones much larger than Space Engine - they are designed for it! Anyway, in particular I would suggest Steam. Steam has been around for probably the longest of the DD platforms, and is generally pretty hassle-free for its users. The people who run Steam have been known to host free games and game mods on it (and, as such, games which hosting on Steam wouldn't earn them money - at least not directly) to which they aren't even affiliated - some examples include 'Spiral Knights', 'DC Universe Online', and 'Global Agenda'.

I don't think it's far fetched, then, that you could ask the Steam staff to host Space Engine given their past reputation as generous hosts. It would also attract some new users to Steam, and so indirectly benefit them too.

I think it would be a great idea. Steam is a good place and there wouldn't be any bandwidth problem.

SpaceEngine is still not a game yet. Once I make the first game release (SE 1.0 or even 2.0), then I will start to search for a good way to distribute it. But I don't like the idea to help obtain money for Steam or any another distributor using SE. They obtain the money by promotion or something else, while I obtain nothing. For now I can upload SE with its addons to several other fast host services that was suggested to me by users. I will deal with it next week.

The problem with Steam too is that, of course, you need steam, and I'm sure there is a group of people interested in the program who do not want to have a video game DD application installed to the computer.

I think that SE should launch on Desura. It's far more stable than steam, it doesn't have that stupid overlay, it has a substantial user-base and it allows you to install mods from ModDB by using the program. It also keeps those mods updated (i think).

That overlay is one of the most useful things ever. There's a reason for me not to get Desura.

It is not very compatible with all games, which annoys me.

I plan start a crowdfunding on the Indiegogo (it is an analog of Kikstarter, that can be used for Russian developers) and simultaneouslygo to Steam Greenlight - this may increase publicity of SpaceEngine and make Indiegogo company successful.

It's been compatible with every game I've used with it so far.

One other thing that would be great would be to launch the new website before starting Indiegogo, though I don't know whether that's possible. It would be nice to have a shiny, "professional" looking site for new people to see when visiting smile

We know it works. Antza and myself have both used it in Steam however SE has a much higher chance of crashing when using the overlay.

G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory

This is what i meant. It will work, but it crashes too often.
