What do I get for donating?

Hello, I downloaded the Space Engine a couple of days ago and I am enjoying it. I could donate to this project, but I see no mention of what I will get for donating. I found the intermediate goals for the total sum of donations, so that is not the point. I understand it is not like a Kickstarter (at least not yet), but can I expect at least some privileged information on improvements? Beta access?

As to me it looks like this game (or simulator) will stay free, I find it a bit hard to determine how much I should donate as well.

Also, if the next funding goal is not met, will I get my money back??? Probably not, but where does it go then?

Edit: for this to be a suggestion and in the correct subforum, maybe you could put this question to the FAQ.

Nope, SpaceEngineer will use it to build an even better Space Engine program.
As a (little) software devlopper I know how much time it can take to build a project, especially this big, and if you wanna build it fast, you're going to need time. Time that isn't free, by the way: work, bills, all thatis a big NOPE to a full-time development process. So far, a 12 months full-tme development objective has been completed, which is great for him, and for us.

After that, I don't know about Vladimir's plans, maybe if you donate you'll participate to a closed beta test of its future game that he'll develop with this engine, but that is all speculations, we don't know what will happen next.

So, by donating you help a fellow developper who is building a big project, so you make next updates even better. Isn't that cool?

OK, it sure is cool and certainly needed. But I would at least like to be somehow recognized as a donor. To have a tag under my avatar or something like that. Like it is now, it looks like my account here will not be connected with the donation at all. It is just anonymous money.

Also, I love the Lithuanian flag next to the Luxembourg on the left.

what I will get for donating

I think you don't understand very well the notion of donating. You are giving money to something you like, you are giving money to Space Engine. Isn't that enough? Space Engine my friend!!! I am throwing money to the screen right now xD

You are right, it would be great to have some kind of honor mention in this forum (not privilege over other at all) but a tag on the avatar is a good idea. You can also change your image and put donator in the lower part of it (or the magnitude of your donation) so that the people can see your contribution.

And yes, ther's a problem with that flag xD

Welcome to the forum

A free copy of the next version of SpaceEngine on the day it's released! Wow!

This is the reason badges won't work. Until the system works differently, it may be best to abstain from this sort of thing entirely; otherwise it will come off as bragging IMHO.

Thanks for replies. I have now donated, I just hope that a Kickstarter-type thing for Space Engine will not be started immediately after my donation. This was also one of my concerns that I forgot to mention.

Well, let's hope that I can one day say that I was helping to start something big (and I don't mean the universe size).

Thank you SpaceMausi, and thanks to all who contribute. It is not easy to integrate automatic tagging on the forum. I think Paypal don't allow to download the account's income log and process it in automatic mode. I even make updates in the donation page manually. I may add some "donor rate" counter for users, but updating of it must be manual too. I see this method: the user send me a PM with his payment data, I check it in my Paypal account, and increase his "rate".

Hmm, yes this is something i thought about aswell some times. Even when some peoples (me aswell) doneted some money, people tend more to donate, when they get something in return. One of the reason i wait for a kickstarter/indiegogo compain, or even both.
The observatory version will be free, but its still a long way to the 80.000$ for the single player version of the game.

One way would be to make the campain and sell the full game for ~15$ or what something like this would cost and set the target to 80.000$. Peoples who pledged already could possible inform the devs then to count it to a pledge, when they succeeded.

Looking at what Space Engine looks like already, i think the goal should be easily to make, with the right campaign.
As stretch goals could be the $120 000 - Online space exploration game, $150 000 - SpaceEngine SDK, $250 000 - MMORPG Sandbox Game.

Space sandbox games are very in atm and i saw a lot of projects with even goals from some hundred thousand dollars who succeed already. And space engine isn't looking any worser as this games. ^^

Of course the developers have to keep sure, they can reach this goals first. Something i have no doubts in. But we should give them the time they need Now they still can create the game how they want it without any demand. This would change, when they actually make a real campain.

I've been seriously thinking about donating, but it disheartens me the SDK seems so out of reach.

When I learned about SE, just before last version was ready, it was like a lightning strike for me, as for many of us I guess.
It's not the goal that matters. Just think about the huge amount of work for a single coder, and look at the results reached until now. I keep looking at the videos over and over trying not to stare with my mouth open.
I had goosebumps when I finally tried the program with a borrowed pc, because mine doesn't meet the specifications.

I've donated what I could, I'm afraid not much as I would, because I felt the urge to do it, if only for the wonder I've felt that first time.

I'll do it again, soon I hope, for the same reason.

If I was older than 14 and had a stable income I'd certainly try to spend a lot more on SE than I currently can. My goal is $1 a day eventually when I start my first job and open a bank account, that adds up to $365/$366 a year. Which is the least I can do for this magnificent piece of art.

Don't add small amounts, as PayPal takes a certain amount for its fee. Better to add larger amounts in fewer donations.

Good Idea, I'll keep that in mind.

I know it's a lot of work, but I'd still love love love to see an SDK. Or hell, just the source code. I'm a programmer writer; if in the future any help is needed with API reference or tutorials, I'd be glad to help out!

p.s. I've worked at Amazon, Disney, & at Microsoft on the Halo team! Does that put me in the running for assisting with cool stuff? biggrin

p.p.s. I just realized how much of a braggart I sound. sad

I think, big donors (>= 500 US$) should get two special motivations: maybe being mentioned somewhere in the game's ABOUT, and even inside the game some stars should be named after them like they were the discoverers of these (fantasy) celestial bodies, and a right-click on that celestial body would open up an option for a brief "history" text where the donor is indeed mentioned as brave discoverer of that system or celestial body. Would be a nice thing.

Medium donors (>= 100 US$ to < 500 US$) should get only one motivation: small-printed mentioning in the game's ABOUT, OR in the naming of an asteroid inside the game somewhere (not a star name).

I believe, this way, donors will be motivated to consider donating more than 100 US$ each, or even more than 500 US$. The financial figures can be altered, of course, I just gave examples.

But yes, a system to recognize the names of donors is mandatory for a project that seeks financial support from donors. That is my opinion.

Then, the website of the game should mention all donors, sorted first by amount, and inside the same amounts then by name of donor or date of donation. The website's font size ranges from larger to normal to small, depending on donation amount, maybe three categories of amounts.
