looking on the amount of modifications and addons ...
I think there should be change in way how mods are loaded w/o need to define / edit default SE files e.g. cfgs

why not just add new folders
\Modifications\
\Addons\

into root of SE

and mimic the SE file-structure there
each modification would need own sub-directory

engine will load SE default an then \Modifications\ and then \Addons\

clearly the modifications will be any 'changes' to default SE
while addons will be only addition to default SE or modded SE

... this is just proposal ...
but the aim is to make modding and addon creation + use as simple as possible
even for not skilled users smile

I think this would be a good idea for a future version as well. Would allow users to have a mod package that they drop in place rather than having to go into different folders and modify core files.

As of right now I think it is very easy for someone to mess their local copy up if they install a mod incorrectly.

thanks, I base this experience on our own games wink ... the more seamless and less editing for the 'end user' the better ...

Yes, it would be good if in future versions of the SE adding galaxies, nebulae, ships was using the auto-installer.

I honestly prefer option to not be forced to some installer ,
please realize that random binaries from internet are good for malware spread ...

so for start it would be fine to be just able drop downloaded content into e.g.
SpaceEngine\Modifications\UltraHDtextures\
SpaceEngine\Addons\NewGreatGalaxy01\

w/o thinking or need to edit any files

...

in fact next useful and logical step would be support of e.g. .7z (7-zip) etc. archive system
so you don't even need to extract the files wink

I plan make an addon install menu in the SE interface. You just drop the file into SpaceEngine/import folder, then SE automatically add it to its folders and scripts. In GUI, you have a menu with list of installed addons with checkboxes to enable/disable them, or even remove. Addon may have a readme/credit file, which will be displayed in the menu when you click on addon.

I agree that auto-installers are a good way to spread malware. Often these installers are recognized by anti-virus software as malicious software.

This is very good solution. So even much better.

I think that it will be much better if all addons are installed in \SEfolder\Addons\ subfolder. The directory structure under Addons subfolder would be similar to the dir.structure under SE main folder:

Obviously folders such as ''cache'' or ''system'' are not required in the addons subfolder wink
That way it will be much easier to find wether a bug is related with an addon or the program itself.

I believe this is an important issue which warrants its own thread. However if the moderators feel that it should be listed under the ''general suggestions'' thread then it can be moved there. After all they have the power and the final word smile
