Done. Colors for ice giants, gas giants and brown dwarves are renamed to colorLayer0 ... colorLayer7. Old designations are still allowed for compatibility.

Is there really a point to the dev blog section(the one that can be accessed from the front page)? It hasn't been updated since 2011 since the dev blogs are now put up on the 'work progress' threads. Due to the fact that it is completely unused and might even confuse people who come to the site, making them think that the game has stopped developing a long time ago, it might be for the best to either remove it or find a way to make it useful again.

Very true, and this is the same for the gallery, which apparently hasn't been updated since 2012. Also, we have a 'News' page, isn't that kinda the same as the 'Blog' page?

I think it would be cool to be able to see system evolve over time and even watch stuff age or grow younger depending on time flow. If you make time go fast enough you can watch big stars go boom and watch smaller stars turn into giants and if you reverse time than you see stuff evolve backwards. I also think lava should be added into SE since I have been looking for lava for quite some time. Oh and disasters should also be possible from volcanic eruptions to stuff colliding. I also think that gas giants and ice giants should not be solid since I have manage to land on a few gas giants infact I landed on all gas giants and ice giants that I attempted to land on.

This would be incredibly complex to implement and I doubt we'll see something like it any time soon.

Oh and disasters should also be possible from volcanic eruptions to stuff colliding.

Same issue with this.

Rendering a gas giant without a surface I would thing would be pretty complex. Having a "solid" surface is to make things simpler. It's the same reason why KSP's Jool has a solid surface.

Even if SE did 1:1 rendering of gas giants you still would not be able to "fly through", this is excluding ship implosion physics.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metallic_hydrogen

You wouldn't be able to just fly through a gas giant, you would hit a region of extremely high pressure liquid to the point it might aswell be a solid. Even if by some chance you could get through these high pressure zones, you would still hit a solid rocky core.

TL;DR gas giants should be solid with thick clouds above said solid surface, its cheap to render and there is no foreseeable technology to ever get into those deeper layers.

Maybe in a future version of SE you might see a better detailed surface, perhaps a silvery blue metallic color that you could fly down to and maybe use for fuel, but other than that venturing into a gas giant isn't going to happen.

Been discussed many times and perhaps in the future a physics version of SE will be made, but for now the main goal is to simulate today's stellar neighborhood.

Planned feature along with night side lights on planets.

Possible planned feature at a later stage in development. Random events have been discussed many times and will probably be added when the full game is made.

It would become too dark to see long before you reached such depths.

as we fly through gas giants and ice giants we actually land on the solid core. as we go deeper into gas giants and ice giants we descend slower as the pressure increases and the gas becomes denser, then goes to liquid and gets more like a solid. depending on the pressure near the core to move quickly we may have to set ship speed to AU speed just to move several km a sec. Also regarding the light as we go deeper it gets hotter so obviously if it gets hot enough the gas and liquid should be able to glow via incandescence, and do not forget lightning depending on the conditions. Jupiter and Saturn both have lightning. Regarding avoiding having your ship implode or explode due to heat, advanced enough aliens could have upgrades that allow our ships to handle going inside gas giants and perhaps even stars. Regarding the lava it can always just look like water except it is red to white depending on temp., and I am assuming that liquids continue to have the flat specked appearance that they have now.

As Doc said, the conditions would become absurdly extreme well before then.

Quote Storm026 ()

The speed of the free camera is absolute. AU/s = AU/s under all circumstances. Also, at high pressures, all forms of rocket engines become useless. Reality isn't like Star Trek. You would need to have a ship which was specifically designed to operate in high pressure environments in order to visit even shallow layers of the atmosphere. This would be complicated, and these designs would limit the capabilities of the craft and might prevent them from reaching great depths.

Quote Storm026 ()
Also regarding the light as we go deeper it gets hotter so obviously if it gets hot enough the gas and liquid should be able to glow via incandescence

But there would be a layer where there is no light. And even when it does start to glow, there will be so little contrast that all you will see is a diffuse ambient light. There would still be very little to see.

Quote Storm026 ()
do not forget lightning depending on the conditions. Jupiter and Saturn both have lightning

Lightning would be only an occasional and momentary light source. Most of the time it would not be helpful.

Quote Storm026 ()

Good for them, but I don't see what this has to do with SE, which has no aliens. Anyway, even aliens must abide by the laws of physics, so there are things that even they would be incapable of, no matter how advanced they were.

Quote Storm026 ()
Regarding the lava it can always just look like water except it is red to white depending on temp., and I am assuming that liquids continue to have the flat specked appearance that they have now.

In order to look good and realistic, it would need to look significantly different.

Anyway, none of this even addresses the fact that what you want for gas giants would be almost impossible to implement, and for the above reasons would not be very practical as it would not add much beyond a certain point. Just wait for volumetric clouds and more realistic atmosphere models, that alone will be a large improvement.

How about changing the favicon of this forum and website to a 16x16 version of the official SpaceEngine icon? smile It's just a minor suggestion for the site... I don't know which one you find better though.

Done. Clear the cache of your browser.

EDIT: that icon looks ugly. I tried different edits, even just letters SE stretched vertically, but it still looks ugly. Ao I changed it back to the old one.

What about a manual deceleration in airplane mode. That would be the ultimate space exploration in SE.
