Looks like there already are companies called 3Sphere and Tri-Sphere, and there is a RPG called Tri-Sphere. I found many online games called Hyper Sphere. So for something unique with this name it needs to be coupled with something. I don't think translations works well. An "overball" in English", "superglobus" in Latin.

Cosmosphere

I've compiled a near-complete list of names that have been suggested so far, and sorted them by popularity. Green is the most popular (3 endorsements), yellow is second (2 endorsements), white is third (1 endorsement), and gray has not been endorsed by anyone so far.

We should try to make some progress in picking a name for SpaceEngine games, and a new name for SpaceEngine software in general (a base name, in other words, to replace "SpaceEngine").

Personally, I vote for Kosmos. It sounds cool and it fits the setting of the the game. Maybe we should take this to the russian forums.

Awww that sucks. IMO, all of the other names are:

1. Too long
2. Don't fit the setting of the game

If Kosmos is no longer an option, my vote goes to: "Final Frontier"

What about "Cosmosis", "Kosmosis", or "Qosmosis"? Combining "Cosmos" with "Osmosis"...

Oh, didn't know. I think we should remove all the names from the list that already exist.

Proteus, what does osmosis have to do with SE?

Here are all the names that should be removed due to copyright issues they could cause.

Cosmos
Cosmos - The Dawn
Glorious Dawn
Final Frontier
Uncharted Worlds
Beyond
Stardust
Singularity
Event Horizon
Ouroboros
Gravity
Eon
Blueshift
Redshift
Zenith
Parabola
Spectra
Zion

All of those I recognize as being used in names, copyrights, and trademarks of media companies. Using any of those is just asking for trouble in the modern Copyright environment.

Besides those names there are a lot of terrible names in that list as well.

G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
EVGA GTX 980 Ti SC 6GB

Sorry, HarbingerDawn. Name "Kosmos" is already using for Virtual 3D Universe.

Why are you saying sorry to me? I didn't come up with the name, nor did I ever endorse it.

Besides those names there are a lot of terrible names in that list as well.

I said I made a list of the names people came up with, not a list of names that were good.

Doc, you should check your list to make sure that everything listed there would actually be a problem. Some of them aren't currently used by any games or movies that I could find (e.g. Uncharted Worlds) and so there's no reason to remove them.

I'd also like to submit another name for consideration (as a general name for SE software): Kosmosim

Also, new rule: no coming up with new names unless you think it's really good, really fitting, and can defend why you chose it. If people keep listing every name that comes into their mind we'll never make any progress.

Uncharted Worlds I left because of the use of that term in Mass Effect. I wouldn't put it past EA to claim it violates some intellectual property.

Other than that one a few of them are not directly linked with games but music, movies, and organizations.

So if a phrase is ever used in a copyrighted work then the phrase itself becomes copyrighted? Pretty sure it doesn't work that way. As for it being a song title, if every song title ever was off limits then we wouldn't be able to use any names. They'd all be taken by the millions of songs that exist.

If we weren't talking directly about a game based in space I would agree with you. Having seen EA's actions towards things that barely resemble one of their intellectual properties I wouldn't put it past them to take action against a game that shares the name with one of their top game's soundtrack.
