High res textures

Hi, I'm new to the forums though I've been using Space Engine for about 8 months and I'd go so far as to say it's one of my favourite applications ever. I could (and have) spent hours just browsing around, visiting systems on the edge of the universe!

The issue I've been having (if it even is an issue) is:
I've downloaded every single high res texture available, including elevation maps, and have followed the installation instructions to the letter (not that they're that complicated!), but when I zoom in to any planet/moon surface within our solar system, they don't appear any different to how they'd look without the high res textures. I've tried them on both 0.9.6 and 0.9.7 and it's the same.

Apologies if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that with these textures, solar system objects would appear as detailed as any object outside of the solar system. If this isn't the case, what purpose do the high res textures serve as I can't see much difference.

You're wrong. It would be impossible to have them appear as detailed as procedural objects, it would require terabytes of data, and anyway that data simply doesn't exist.

If you applied them correctly, Mercury, Earth, Moon, and Mars should be noticeably more detailed. The Moon is probably easiest to notice. If you can't see any difference, then you either did not install the textures correctly or you did not make a good comparison between the two, because the difference between the default and the addons in those cases is formidable. You can see here what the Moon should look like with the addon pack, and here what Mercury should look like.

When I look at those objects from similar angles they do appear like the screenshots you mentioned, so I guess I installed them correctly (when I get a chance I'll run 0.9.7 with textures and 0.9.6 without side by side just to make sure). I just thought that when you're right down on the surface they'd look similar to a procedurally generated planetoid of the same class.

Anyway, this is not a problem or complaint at all, I just wanted to confirm I'd done everything correctly. Besides, I'm enjoying discovering beautiful scenes all over the universe.
