I have created a much higher resolution map for Mercury located here. I will leave this download available for as long as possible for anyone who wants it, but it is now effectively obsolete.

Again, there is a
64K Mercury map available here: http://en.spaceengine.org/forum/17-638-1, which should be used instead of this one.

I have created a high resolution map for Mercury based on mosaics released by NASA made from images from the MESSENGER spacecraft. It makes Mercury in SpaceEngine look like real photographs smile The resolution of the map is 1 km/px

Some screenshots:

Download link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/q2dmfkyl5ae21yq/Mercury-16k.rar (75.4 MB)

It is easy to install, just extract into your SpaceEngine directory. No overwriting or file modifications necessary.

Damn that's awesome, good work! Imagine that the procedural moons in SE could actually look like this one day. Used the first image as wallpaper! biggrin

Great! Can you share source texture or give me a link to dataset?

I have created a thread with links to useful addon resources. The link to the maps on the MESSENGER website is located there: http://en.spaceengine.org/forum/17-631-1

I do not have the system or software to use the highest resolution map (250 m/px), which is why I used the 1 km/px map for this addon.

What software do you use for editing large image files to make maps?

Everyone take note: I have just completed work on a much higher quality 64k Mercury surface texture (4x the resolution of this one). It will take a while to upload, but I will definitely have it on the forum by 0800 UTC tomorrow (Monday 11 June 2012), most likely sooner, as soon as 0000 UTC.

If you already downloaded this, or were planning to download it, you should get the 64k version when it becomes available. The only downside is its extremely large size (1 GB). I might make a JPEG version that would be smaller in size, but that would be available later.
