Well I first thought it was OK, but then I realized it was supposed to represent our own Solar System. Like what moon or planet is in the first photo? I don't recognize it.

EDIT: So apparantly it should be Mercury. Also, the second planet says Venus, but it's blueish? I thought it was Uranus.

I will be inactive on this forum for the time being. Might come back eventually

Call me a astronomy graphics noob - what exactly about it determines that it is underwhelming and awful looking?

Aesthetically, nothing; it's subjective, although there are common grounds on what is beautiful and what it not (roundness, complementary colors, contrast, details, etc.)

Relative low quality of many of the textures, serious lack of realism, and so on. And these are not things that are hard to get right either, SE gets it right after all.

How about the solar effects and detail of the star, as shown in the video posted on the last page? (also below)

(particularly at 3:30)?

Elite Dangerous' depiction of Jupiter:

Real Jupiter:

The whole Sol system looks pretty terrible imo. Mars is kinda neat though.

I think it must have been done on purpose otherwise people wouldn't want to visit other systems tongue

To be fair, Elite is going to be judged more by gameplay than by realism, and to that end there already have been some deliberate tradeoffs. I think the Sol system was introduced just a few days ago, so it's likely not been a high priority. Anyway, they have a fair amount of liberty in the rendering of Jupiter and the gas giants, since Elite is set well over 1000 years into the future, and the weather patterns may change before that. So I don't think it makes sense for Elite to include huge textures for these planets, but rely on procedural stuff instead.

Since the first release has to focus on gameplay, I think Elite is looking very promising, surely exceeding the visual expectations that I had when the Kickstarter thing was announced.

I'm an early backer of Elite (though a Linux version is nowhere near yet), so I might be biased. It's a game that I strongly believe must be made for modern hardware and a new generation of gamers. I think it's more important that it gets out in a playable state than it's visually perfect in every respect. If planets in Elite look awful, I wonder what adjective should be used for the look of KSP planets (though they're explicitly not meant to be our planets), but why care when the game is fun to play?

I agree with this. Even though Sol looks kinda bad at this point, i can just go somewhere else and start frying pirates with my eagle cool I'm not too bothered by it.

Originally there were only two planet types, and you could only tell them apart when setting the graphics to high detail. They looked like this:

It helps that computers these days have more than 32K of memory. smile

EDIT: I found this video of the making of the original Elite:

Have any of you heard of a game called abashera? It's not very popular, and its kind of old. But i do remember playing it when i was very young. It's a 3d FPS (without the shooting) Maze game. And it's probably one of the scariest games i have ever played! It is similar to a game called LSD: dream emulator. There are some monsters/ creatures in the game that chase you, but there is always a solution to solve every puzzle. I tried playing it today, but the game isn't compatible with Nvidia, so i can only see blank textures. I guess it's just the badly modeled creatures, textures and foggy environment that made it so scary.

As someone who has never heard of Homeworld, this sounds interesting.

What's the game about?
