Couple pictures of same spider.

For scale here is a US dime set right next to the spider from behind

I really need a real macro lens for such things, but for $60 of macro attachments and a telephoto I'd say its pretty impressive.

Posted this before, but this is what I use

As Antza2 calls it, the seal clubber.

Big McLonghuge

Interesting way of holding his legs together; never seen a spider do that.

Such things probably evolved because it was beneficial not to touch weird looking bugs or animals. Not everyone has those fears or phobias, myself included, so it could just be an environmental factor.

^ This. Humans were never preyed upon by giant arthropods, but historically many types of insects and arachnids have either carried deadly diseases or packed a deadly bite or sting. While the vast majority were and are harmless to humans, it's better in an evolutionary sense to play it safe and steer clear.

I think it has to be more with the unpredictability of their weird movements.
By the way, If there's some kind of genetic propension to this fear, it dosen't need to be originated in humans. Maybe when we where little reptiles somo giant arachnids and scorpions preyed us and we have some kind of adaptative configuration in our reptilian brain that responds to them creating an irrational and instinctive terror.
But yes. I agree this is quite ridiculous and even a bit Lamarckist.

Some pictures from my recent vacation

I visited a friend and they put me in charge of the fireworks, so of course I was irresponsible with them.

Here is 124 sparklers tied together, it burned extremely fast and I took a bunch of images of it however here is the brightest one

It was so hot that the inner sparklers were glowing white hot, didn't get a good picture of that but here it is after it cooled down a bit

Friend's leopard gecko

And a spider
