but it is nonetheless a blight upon humanity.

Especially when a religion tells people its fine to kill others who disagree with the belief system.

This has never been shown in a controlled experiment, all we have are anecdotes.

There wasn't a real experiment, but the number of cases trends to be enormous, and their ressemblence can't be a coincidence.

I've never been a remotely 'spiritual' person. I think it's mostly due to my love of science as a kid (Carl Sagan was my hero), but I wonder if there's some natural variation our brains that predisposes a significant portion of the population to spiritual/religious beliefs regardless of upbringing. I know it's been suggested that religiosity is tied to OCD and the schizophrenia range of mental disorders.

Predisposition for spirituality or religion isn't genetic. We saw families of the same religion because they live in the same context.
And I claim one thing : "do not confound religion and spirituality", it is like confounding a fact and its interpretation.

Why can't it be a coincidence? Most human minds share many similarities and vulnerabilities, and much of the world also shares similar cultural ideas in many areas. It is quite conceivable that many people could tell a similar story relating to spirituality that turned out to be a product of their imperfect mind coupled with cultural notions. I do know of a few cases in which experiments regarding the phenomenon of out-of-body experiences has been tested in a scientific manner, with people who at first seemed to have an unnatural ability, and in the end it was proven that they really weren't having the experiences that they thought they were. It's just that most people who claim to have these experiences or abilities are reluctant to allow the possibility to be put to a real test, because they don't want to be wrong.

It's a phenomenon similar to that of alien abduction stories. Many people have vivid recollections of these events, and most describe similar occurrences. There are millions of these reports. Does that mean that they can't be coincidence either?

I highly recommend Carl Sagan's book The Demon-Haunted World. He talks about phenomena such as these at great length, and in his uniquely capable way, with personal anecdotes, the stories of others, and scientific investigation of them.

I am familiar with sleep paralysis, and I'm almosty sure that alien abduction is a kind of this phenomenon. There is a lot of similarities between these tho things : you do things aigainst your will, you have hallucinations, strange feelings...

In the case of OBE, people describe that feelings are differents from sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming.

I did not mean to suggest that the two phenomena were symptomatically the same, only that it is possible to have a large number of people reporting similar experiences when in fact it was all a psychological aberration.

Somehow related to the topic, I remember a concept of future for the humanity, from my favorite writers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky.

In the "Noon Universe" cycle, in the 22-nd century, the new treatment is invented, something related to hypothalamus - "a fukamisation". As the result, a human gains some improved abilities - he develops excellent health, high resistance to illness and damage. They can withstand a high dose of radiation, heal wounds by concentration of mind, see(or rather feel) in complete darkness and gain a great speed of reaction. It doesn't, however, grant an ability of telekinesis, reading or manipulating human mind, or teleportation, and many others. This method can be used for everyone and has no known negative effects.

Later, however, in "The Time Wanderers" novel it is mentioned that there's an institute that studies the rare and odd occasions of human abilities, more directly related to concept of "spiritualism". However, the author's approach may be considered as highly-scientific, not sensual.
