I have no issues running SpaceEngine (or any other game, really) 1920x1080 windowed with a "lower" card.

That's not exactly a low-end card...

Oh, I thought it would be by now ... it's almost 3 years out of date.

My processor is 5 years old, my RAM is around 5 years old, and pretty much my entire system is 3 years or older besides my GPU. I bought everything around early 2011 but the parts were all made the year before, same thing for my GPU it was made in 2013 and I got it in 2014. I still constantly run games maxed out at 1080p around 60fps and have no problems pushing many games to 4k resolution and running them nearly maxed out at that res too.

Just because your parts are old doesn't mean they are low end. Some updates between generations only barely increase speed and memory but do other updates to power consumption, size, and chip architecture. These newer chips may run things slightly better, or sometimes slightly worse, than the last gen, but previous generation cards can still compete. It takes major technological leaps or many small changes over a long period of time to move a high end card to low end.

Close to planet surface I get about ~ 30fps +- 5 and the killer is close/inside nebulae and close but not inside galactic core where there are too many nebulae generationg it gan go down to 10-15 fps
