Looks like it was more an unusual weather forecast than it was unusual weather. Forecast said about 60 cm for NY, possibly more, and they shut down a lot. Actual amounts were 10-15 cm.

They got it wrong for NY, but got it right for where I live. Also, most forecasts I saw said more like 30-45 cm for NY, only the NWS forecast such a high snowfall amount. And actual amount for NYC (Central Park) was 25 cm, with other places throughout the city receiving between 10 and 30.

Media probably extrapolating: overreporting the forecast and underreporting the actual amounts, to create a story. It's hard to measure accumulations anyway if this was a blizzard and snow piles up, so it's probably easy to construct a story.

Since I set up a ultrasound snow depth sensor in my backyard 10 years ago, the worst 24h snowfall here was a change from 69 to 109 cm (which could translate into about 50 cm for the shovel). It probably doesn't get much worse than that here ever. We're on the dry side of the mountains. And I've never experienced major problems getting around in Oslo by car in these situations, just slower traffic. They seem to be able to clear all roads, even the smaller ones, at least twice a day if needed.

So 60 centimeters of snow its lot for you? We had 60 centimeters in 2013 in a storm in our dry warm country. I thought 60 is not that much

60 cm in a day? I would call that a serious snowfall even for places which usually get that kind of weather every winter. Unless it's very fluffy stuff, that's about 75 kg per m². Remember that in order to get that kind of precipition you either need big mountains or a warm country struck by a freak cold front. The higher the latitude, the colder it gets and the big snowfalls get more rare. It will never snow 60 cm in a day on the north pole and certainly not on the south pole.

Some towns in western Norway reached a total accumulation of about 250 cm in early January this year, depths that have never been seen that early in the season. It means a lot of work so buildings don't collapse, like here in Voss: http://www.abcnyheter.no/nyheter....mye-sno

Chrome offered to translate that page into English, and did a wonderful job... except, despicably, it insists on translating "To meter" into "Two feet"... stupid 'murica.

Even changing the translation language to United Kingdom English didn't help.

Today again there was a snowstorm, a first severe one in the entire winter. Not something very unusual, but the difference is that it usually happens around January - but January this year was aither very warm or very cold and normal snow didn't stay for long. Today I've had my turn to clean it in near our workplace (our department has a little 2x3 meter patch near entrance which is left for our responsibility). I've had to go every 2 hours and clean fresh 5 cm layer of snow (mostly because of wind), and I broke our plastic shovel eventually. The transport system is overloaded and I've had a hard time returning home today. At least now I can try out some skiing on nearby track.

Yup, or someone needs to update their graphics card.
But that is one cool picture though!

I think its the unusual February I ever seen! Yesterday there was huge sand storm from egypt and the air pollution was the worst in 5 years! Hundreds of people went to the hospital because they couldn't breathe. I have asthma too. http://www.haaretz.com/news/national/1.641983
And maybe there will be on 23/2 -5c in jerusalem! The record there is -6.7c that recorded in 1907!

Sorry that i am talking too much but probably there will be 3 days of snow here in few days from now! Yay!
Israel becoming more Europe like every year, do you think its confidence or the climate is really changing?

This has been the pattern as of late for North America, and expected to persist for the foreseeable future. Total dichotomy between east and west.
