That's like saying you prefer to live in Afghanistan because it's not North Korea.

At least Google let's you delete an account permanently.

What's the difference between permanently deleting and account, and deleting one that you can reactivate if you want, but just choosing to never do so? (Also, I'm pretty sure it's possible to permanently delete a Facebook account too).

From what I've heard it's impossible. The difference is that Google is more willing to allow people to leave their services- I respect them for this. They're even adding Gmail to Google takeout too (finally).

I prefer G+. Other people prefer FaceBook. The universe is big enough for all of us.

Facebook is perfectly willing too; if you don't want to use it anymore, you can stop. They won't try to stop you. Also, I just checked again to make sure, and you absolutely can permanently delete your Facebook account and its associated content.

The main trouble with Google is that they abuse your data. Google aim to know everything about you, store it and make money from it, and G+ is a very direct way for them to get such data. I'm getting concerned about Android. Perhaps Ubuntu will offer a break and I hope it can get mainstream and different from Android.

So does Facebook, or any other free service where the revenue based on advertising.
The most important thing to remember is the only things these companies know is what you tell them. If you don't want your data abused or misused, don't share it- its that simple.

Google makes money based on targeted advertising towards their users-all to do is install adblock and opt out of certain things like those shared endorsements. Keep in mind that Ubuntu is just as guilty of advertising in their OS. For example, they have amazon search results (what on Earth were they thinking?). Then there's ubuntu unity, which IMHO can be very slow and bloated sometimes (depending on the PC).

Not really. Google can and will do better than just to use what you tell them on G+. Unless you take care, they know what you search for on the Internet. If you have an Android phone, they know, again unless you take care, they follow your steps 24 hours a day. They even aim to predict your behaviour, to do things that people perhaps would find useful. Like, perhaps your phone, on its own initiative, can tell you that your bus that you're going to is late, that a shop nearby has stuff on sale that you often buy, etc. Cool, but the potential for abuse is enormous. Perhaps people wont care.

Google is not the only company. Just the biggest and best one in this game.

This is getting a little off topic, but I think people need to realize that we live in an age of Big DataTM and many aspects of our lives are recorded whether we like it or not -- it's just a fact of life for anyone who uses the internet and communications devices. This understandably leads to much concern, bordering upon conspiracy-theory, especially here in the United States with people concerned about the NSA. But the thing about big data is that it is so big that nobody is actually looking at you on a personal level. Most of this information is never even seen by human eyes, but is rather analyzed by computers for whatever purpose relevant to the organization using that data -- from targeted advertising to counter-terrorism.

For those who don't like putting information out there then usually there are steps to limit it; e.g. I never put my phone numbers, birth date, etc on google+ et. al. In general, however, there is just no such thing as complete privacy in a digital society.

More on topic, I'm not much of one for social media, though I do use Google+ and I can also be found on Steam. (And on that note, I just learned that we have a Steam group.) smile

Well, I never thought I'd do this before but I finally just switched over to facebook (i.e. I'm actually using it now), but only because its not g+. The real reason is because I'm switching away from Google's services for (reasons).

I created a group on What's App, if you want to join send me a PM!

Also: "communityes" should be spelled "communities", if it wasn't intentional wacko
