I was merely pointing out that the drone in the video appears to be pretty small and somewhat flimsy compared to the typical plane

The Laser Weapon System is not meant to be used against large combat aircraft. It is meant to be used against small drones like the one shown in the video, small boats, and to interfere with optical sensor systems. Its effectiveness against something like an F-16 is irrelevant since that is not the type of target it is designed for.

A drone is more specific.

No it is not. Drone simply means an unpiloted aircraft. This does not imply a size; the largest drone ever (that I am aware of) had a mass of about 100 tons. Others mass only a few kilograms or less. Piloted aircraft show a similar range of sizes. So specifying something as a "drone" by itself does little to describe the craft, other than it having no crew on board.

And again, stating that it was a "drone, not a plane" is inaccurate. It is both.

I understand that you're pointing out that this was a small aircraft not built for combat, but I don't see the relevance.

This does not imply a size;

The point is that while the weapon can track any plane, it's effective only on smaller, more flimsy aircrafts. Which isn't clear if you use the word "plane". And, on average, drones are lighter than average planes, but since that correctly doesn't necessarily imply the point, I did add the part about kg, not tonnes to clarify.

I think you're a bit grumpy now.

Yes, which is because that is what it is designed for.

And it still isn't clear if you use the word "drone". My point earlier was that you said it was a "drone, not a plane" which is wrong. It is both a drone and a plane. I have no problem calling it a drone, I was just making sure you knew that it is also a plane.

The reason I said what I said was because it seemed that you were implying that drones were necessarily small, and planes were necessarily not. I pointed out that drones and planes are not mutually exclusive, and that both crewed and uncrewed aircraft can be large or small. Your part about kg and tons did not clarify anything, at least for me. Instead it seemed to reinforce the false dichotomy I thought you had presented.

Seriously though, it's really impressive that the tracking for the laser weapon is so accurate that it can pinpoint a specific spot on a flying plane from a moving and rolling ship, and maintain that for several seconds like that.

This technology has existed for quite a few years now.

Sure, but this doesn't change what I was saying about the impressiveness of the targeting system. smile

Yes, the Americans have demonstrated this, as well.

Several hours ago we set ANOTHER all time attendance record for the forum with 128 visitors. This now exceeds the all time record from the Russian forum.

Also, happy Cosmonautics Day and Yuri's Night everyone! happy (sorry UN, but "International Day of Human Space Flight" is just way too long)
