Here in America, stores are starting to put Christmas stuff up, it's about 70*F (21*C) whereas around this time, it is usually about 50*F (10*C). Climate change...

Instantaneous temperature at a location isn't easily attributable to climate change. Weather vs. climate and all that. smile +11C anomalies aren't hugely significant, and you can find larger negative anomalies than that in other places right now.

However, most of the northern hemisphere and the world is currently warmer than climatology, and that is attributable to global warming. Especially averaged over a few weeks or months:

Watsisname, on your maps, looks like the colder areas are over Russia, which only partially makes sense. It makes sense in the way that Russia is mostly wilderness and therefore, the air is less polluted. However, this doesn't explain why it's colder than average.

It's mostly a matter of what the weather is doing -- the motion of air masses and the atmospheric circulation. In the mid and high latitudes, a really good way to get an indication of whether temperature is going to be warmer or colder than normal is to look at what the jet streams are doing.

When the jet stream meanders poleward (ridging), it brings warmer air, and when it meanders equator-ward (troughing), it brings colder air. This matches up pretty well with the observed surface temperature anomalies. Check out the northern Pacific in particular.

Much of North America is under a very large ridge. That's why it's warmer there. Siberia is under a trough, with very high pressure. That brings in cold air.

The high pressure is also important: High pressure is associated with cooler and drier air. Making air colder tends to dry it out since it can hold less moisture. Furthermore, drier air is easier to cool, because of the greenhouse effect. Water vapor is a greenhouse gas, so dry air allows heat from the surface to escape to space more easily.

Watsisname, ah, of course! Also, with autumn, there are strong winds. These are very annoying because the airport I fly out of has a north-to-south runway, so I get strong crosswinds this time of year! I went flying last week, and I could barely get the plane to land on the runway. I talked to another pilot who tested out the pattern and he decided he wanted to stay on the ground as well.

On a related note, I've been looking very intently at properties in New Zealand.

The current affairs of this nation make me troubled. I desire distance in remote and untroubled lands.

I woke up and looked at the news. My reaction was of surprise, amusement and terror.
