Just watched Gravity, it was ok.

I saw Gravity- it was my first 3D movie. Ever.

Anyway, it was amazing visually, and it didn't look "fake" like alot of the CGI these days- most of it, especially the ISS scenes, all looked convincing. The 3D was OK, although my glasses broke before the movie started and I had to run out and get a pair from the pile in the recycle bin. Whatever...

Thus, it was excellent except for

[Re: Europa Report]

Yeah, there didn't seem to be much advertisement for it. I didn't hear about it either until someone brought it up on these forums a while back.

And actually on that note I finally got around to finding and watching it last night. Thought it was pretty enjoyable. Fairly good scientific accuracy and portrayal of scientists working on an exploratory mission. Much better than most hollywoodized space sci-fi of late. smile Cinematography/effects aren't that great but it actually works in the film's favor. Only complaint is the characters and plot seemed a little under-developed.

I googled a bit, but I didn't even find out whether it will be screen in Norway at all or a date for a DVD/Bluray release. sad

I just watched Venus set below the horizon when its altitude was -8'. It was bright even through all that atmosphere.

To me, this looks like a very pro-playstation video. First of all, the two race games look (to me at least) identical. No really, they do! Then, comparing Minecraft to Killzone? Seriously?

It's not meant to be a serious comparison, probably why it was posted in this thread as opposed to the video game thread.

Just watched an interesting video about Graham's number.
It's quite big...

Billy_Mayes, Wow, if someone thought that googol was big, then this will blow their mind. I also did some research on Wikipedia, and discovered something that made it even more mind blowing- if you took the approximate size of the universe in planck lengths, you would still get a number smaller than Grahams'!

It's not only smaller but unfathomably smaller! Even the number of possible arrangements of Planck volumes doesn't compare. smile

Number of Planck volumes in observable universe is ~10186.
Number of arrangements is the factorial of that, or ~10186! ~ 10^10^10^2.275. That's stupidly big, you can't even write it in standard scientific notion without using iteration.

But arrow notation rapidly gets even worse.
3↑↑3 = 3↑3↑3 = 3^3^3 = 3^27 ~ 7 trillion. Now add more arrows.
3↑↑↑3 = 3↑↑(3↑↑3) = 3↑↑(3^3^3) = 3↑↑(3^27) ~ 3↑↑(7x1012) or 3^3^3^3^3... repeated about 7 trillion times. We're already at a number far greater than 10^10^10^2.275, and we can't even use iterated scientific notation to write it anymore.

Now add more arrows. And now make a nested loop where the result of each step determines the number of arrows used in the next step. You rapidly get to a stage where even the iterated arrow notation fails. That's the craziness of Graham's Number. surprised

That is fabulous.

A number that is necessarily far higher than the quantity of anything in the universe at any given point. Anything physical, anyway.
