In 0.97, we have got a new, nice feature-the wiki. It gives us a lot of useful info, and apart from that, has a description section that is currently, unfortunately, unable to edit due to the lack of a text editor. Nevertheless, it is still useful for objects that we know of, as it can give us a detailed description of them.

There is a problem here, however, and that is that there are currently very few actual descriptions in-game (The Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto). Some extremely notable objects are missing their descriptions (The Moon, Galilean moons, Triton). Do not get me wrong- This isn't SpaceEngineers fault at all, there is much more important stuff to develop than the descriptions of catalog objects, and that is where we, the community, come to contribute.

First, announce what celestial body you want to do a description for, it could be anything, even extra-solar catalog objects, but bear in mind that the Sol system should be a priority right now. E.x:"I am going to do a description for Io". Then, write it going with a categorization of the info in the following way (Ceres and Jupiter currently use this categorization and it is very good):

1. Overview- Some basic info on the object
2. Surface environment- For rocky bodies
3. Internal structure- Composition, layers, core etc.
4. Atmosphere- Independent section in rocky bodies, merged with internal structure on gas giants
5. Moons (If possible)- Notable moons and origin of moons
6. Rings (if possible)
7. Orbit- If there is some sort of anomaly to it
8. Exploration

Some rules:

DO NOT copy-paste from the internet, since anyone can do that. Browse the internet for useful info and then write it yourself, not literally copying the text.
And
Do not make too many grammar mistakes

When you are done:

1. Include the description in a spoiler, so others can read it and suggest changes
2. Include a text file attachment (Notepad, Word, anything that fits you)

Other members should then suggest changes to the text including correcting grammar mistakes and typos.

Some extremely notable objects are missing their descriptions (The Moon, Galilean moons, Titan, Triton).

Titan does have one. Also, just to complete your list of ones that do have them, Chiron (a.k.a. 2060 Chiron) has one too.

It might be a good idea to make a list in the OP of objects that already have descriptions, and maybe objects that people are writing descriptions for but haven't been finished, perhaps color coded to make it easier to read.

Quote DeathStar ()
Then, write it bearing in mind some of these 'tips':

The best tip would be to follow the pattern that already exists with the objects that have more structured descriptions (e.g. Ceres, Chiron). Then if there is enough information available to write about, it can be expanded upon following that same pattern.

Otherwise this is a good project, and something that I hope many people contribute good content to.

Also, I've moved this to Mods and Addons since this is an addon/content contribution project, and not simply feedback.

Thanks for informing me, I must have misclicked or something when I was checking if it has a description. I will add a section in the OP with completed, in-game and being-written descriptions.

Agreed. I have noticed that some objects do not have this (inner planets and the Sun), and some do (Ceres, Jupiter...).

Yeah, I wasn't sure where exactly to put it, so thanks for moving it to the correct section.

They were not all done at the same time, in the same manner, or by the same person. But ideally all objects should use that format, so if someone wants to re-write the ones that aren't that'd be great.

This is an awesome idea! I am willing to write some descriptions!
Also, update your in-game list, as The Sun has a description too.

I will be inactive on this forum for the time being. Might come back eventually

I have made some sort of beta-version for the description of Ganymede. I tried to make it present as much general and important data as possible, while not overburdening it with unnecessary information. Post your thoughts, suggestions and report any grammar mistakes you see.

EDIT:Also, why didn't the forum just add my message to the previous one? Strange...
EDIT2:Updated

DeathStar, in the final version be sure to use the same format as the existing entries. Section headings should use the [big] tag and should be separated from the previous section by two blank lines.

OK, I have made it the same as the other entries, and after a few tries, it successfully worked in-game, but later I tweaked some stuff, did the same thing again, but this time I couldn't get it to work in-game again. Can someone tell me what exactly is wrong?

Put the } on the next line down from ", not next to it. And put a tab before Descr to keep it aligned properly.

OK, did this, and the text showed up this time. Hooray! But the absurd values were still there, I am assuming that it was because of the fact that there are two Plutos. I literally have no idea how a second Pluto got there, since I only fiddled with Ganymede. Deleted the second Pluto description, and the values were back to normal.

On a side note, are there any suggestions or changes you would like to make for the text itself?

EDIT: Wait- I still keep getting the absurd values. I actually replaced the cfg file with a completely new one, and I am still getting the absurd values on Ganymede. Anyone else having this problem?
