If SpaceEngine ever wanted to be on steam, now its easier than ever:

http://steamcommunity.com/greenlight/

There are many sandbox/simulation like apps already on steam - even space related - Universe Sandbox for instance

It would certainly gain some attention and bring new fans and enlarge the spaceengine community

I don't think Space Engine is ready to go onto any digital distribution platform yet. There is a lot of work to be done and Space Engineer already said he wants to get the engine finished and as bug free as possible so he can make his game.

I'd love to see it on Steam though, but I can tell you from running it as a non-steam game the overlay crashes it.

I agree with this. Maybe first put Space Engine in Kickstarter or similar.

SpaceEngine is planned to go on Indiegogo, probably soon. Everyone get your donations ready smile

I've put some money aside that I'll donate when it goes up. But thats not a digital distribution software as far as I know.

I think Space Engineer should get Steamworks support eventually though as Steam has plenty of people.

I know, I was commenting on the Kickstarter idea. SpaceEngine should probably stay as-is for now, as far as distribution goes. But when it gets to v1.0 then putting it on Steam or something similar would be a good idea for spreading word of it before the eventual game is developed.

Is it possible for a US citizen to put up the kickstarter in your name? Someone you trust a great deal, I suppose.

The problem for something like that might be in trying to transfer funds internationally after the end of the campaign. Probably more trouble than it's worth.

Going to bump this thread because it might be relevant for the next release of SE.

Steam recently had Early Access added and this seems like the perfect category for Space Engine.

Quote

What is Early Access?

Get immediate access to games that are being developed with the community's involvement. These are games that evolve as you play them, as you give feedback, and as the developers update and add content.

We like to think of games and game development as services that grow and evolve with the involvement of customers and the community. There have been a number of prominent titles that have embraced this model of development recently and found a lot of value in the process. We like to support and encourage developers who want to ship early, involve customers, and build lasting relationships that help everyone make better games.

This is the way games should be made.

I never saw Kerbal Space Program on Greenlight and that is now on Steam.

So, it is even better than Kickstarter or Indiegogo? I should learn more about it...

I highly recommend that you look into this. Steam is much better known than Kickstarter or Indiegogo. Steam also allows for automatic updating, which would make releasing updates for the game much easier. Now with this Early Access system, you can release the game and start earning money even though the game is not finished. smile

It also might be useful to do both Steam and Indiegogo, depending on how much effort that would take. But Steam is by far the better platform for reaching people.

Keep in mind that some websites don't allow you to use multiple fund raising services at once. I'm not sure if indiegogo has this policy, but i know that many similar sites do.

Steam early access requires that game must be already on greenlight, but greenlight requires that game must be "almost complete".
