I've been trying to find more info about the history of Space Engine. It was originally based on Celestia, right? Very recently I've tried some older versions of the program and it's interesting to see how it evolved to where it is today. By old versions, I mean .85, .9, and .94 (the only ones I could find).

Anyway, is there a version history page? A "changelog"? How did SpaceEngine start out? What were the original features/intentions/differences from Celestia? What was the first publicly available version? Etc. I'm really curious- I only found out about the program at the beginning of the year.

I think Space Engineer said Space Engine was heavily inspired by Noctis.

Could be wrong though but I'm sure someone will come along and correct me or add onto that.

Well version 0.94 was current when I came along. SpaceEngine was originally based on Celestia in many ways, though it has obviously grown beyond that and nothing of Celestia remains in the engine except the intro to the galaxy catalog smile

I've added as much information as I could on version histories and releases on the SpaceEngine Facebook page (one of my only contributions to that, really); you can find it here: http://www.facebook.com/SpaceEngine
All info before v0.93 was not added by me.

First public release may have been v0.74? That was way before my time, I was still an avid Celestia user back then. The only things I have seen from that era are videos.

SpaceEngine is not based on Celestia nor any other engine, I wrote the code all by myself (except some common algorithms like quicksort, memory manager, OpenGL tricks, that can be found in books and everywhere else on the Internet). The first public version was 0.74, it was released on the Russian GameDev forum. It has no ATI support, no procedural planets, but has 3D landscape on Earth and other real planets. You can follow SE evolution on the Russian GameDev, if you wish:

http://www.gamedev.ru/projects/forum/?id=122716

Until v0.74, SE had a very quick version number history, every small improvement increased the number bo 0.1: 0.5 - 0.6 - 0.7. Then I realized that I did not have time to finish SE until number 1.0 was reached, so I now decrease the speed and now every big release has a version number increased by 0.0.1, while patches add 0.0.0.1: 0.9.6.0 - 0.9.6.1 - 0.9.6.2

If I find the time, I will post the changelog history.

Ah, I thought you had mentioned one time that some of it had started from Celestia code. My mistake.

So did I. That's why I thought there may have been more to it. I had thought SpaceEngine was based in part on Celestia at first, a modification perhaps, but during its development it grew into something larger than originally intended- eventually becoming independent of the original program when Celestia's code was unnecessary/replaced with other code.

It's cool to see the changes in procedural planet generation from one version to the next. Once version 1.0 is out (perhaps in a century, give or take a few years smile ) someone should make a video to show the various significant additions and improvements in each version.

This is about the history of SpaceEngine. Why would we post a video of a version that has not even been released yet? Also, that video is already posted elsewhere. It even has its own thread. There's not really any reason for it to be here.

This is about the history of SpaceEngine.

History doesn't end at the present, the future is part of it too. It seems sensible for it to be here too.

They don't teach you about the first men on Mars in History class. I get your point, but my point was that it was a bit outside the focus of this thread, and it is also highly redundant since it already has its own dedicated thread, so it should have gotten no more than a link to that thread, not a re-post of the same vid, at least for now.

Where can copies of the older versions be found? This site has practically nothing before .93. Would be nice to experienze firsthand earlier stages of the Engine....

PS most of the linx on GameDev.ru involving SE are DEAD. I mean the linx therein to the program....
