I was looking at the star names file - stars120k.txt - and I was wondering exactly what the numbers were. In the similar file in Celestia - starnames.dat - the numbers correspond directly to HIP numbers, but in the SpaceEngine file the numbers are different. I was wondering what the numbers mean exactly and possibly what the relationship is to HIP numbers, and also how to add custom star names to a particular star.

Thanks

This is a internal star number. You can see it in debug mode (press *) - it is typed after stars' name (Star[xxxx]).

SpaceEngineer, I have checked, and the star numbers in the list do not match up with the star numbers in SpaceEngine (for example, 61 UMa is 54342 on the list, but 54443 in SpaceEngine). But (of course) all the stars that are supposed to be labeled properly are.

Could this difference be due to having non-standard stars in catalogs I'm using (such as Amwhere's Nearby Star Catalog)? And if so, is there a way to determine which number to use in the list?

Ahhh, yes, sorry... Internal numeration has changed, then SE adds or removes stars by reading script catalogs. There is a way to determine initial internal number - comment out all scripts star catalogs in the universe.cfg. Another way - just create a script catalog for your stars that will replace the stars from the binary catalog (RemoveStar "Name" can be useful).

I suspected that this might work, thank you for confirming it.

Commenting out the scripts still did not work. I'm just going to replace the stars in the catalog :/
