Not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I wanted to have thread on generation ships because I think they are a technological and ethical feat that should present a good challenge to humanity. I think we should discuss the ship's general layout and design all the way to religon and government aboard the ship.

By the way, if anyone is good at 3D modelling and wants to take the time it would cool to see a ship model based on the suggestion that may be on the thread.

Okay. Well... I like the idea of generation ships too. I even wanted to write a short story about that once.
It seems that the design of space ships is really much restricted by the laws of physics. I am more on the artist side, so I am scared that the design I would propose, would be largely unrealistic. (At least I know now that all ships need shields in front of them to cover them from micro meteors)
The pictures I saw on the internet looked pretty much like the ships we already have in the game (much bigger of course).

I propose that the interior of a generation ship should replicate the look we get when we are on earth to ensure the highest quality of life for several generations.

The problem about this kind of ship is the SIZE of the project. Granted, with enough resources put into it, some sort of cylindrical structure could be built and rotated to generate a decent G for all the generations to live inside, but I have seen some artistic renderings of hollowed out asteroids. That kind of aproach saves a lot by using the raw materials on site and theoretically, could be done this century.

This kind of ship wouldn't look much different from the outside from a regular asteroid, except for the engine I guess.
The interior could be just like a normal "ring space station" with multiple decks to take advantage of the centripetal force. That way, the Zero G labs and all the technical sections could be located near the axis of the asteroid/ship and the living quarters on the outer decks.

My idea for a generation ship would have 3 rotating rings, separated by security systems, a passport and visa system and medical screening to lower risk of disease. The rings would also act as 3 branches of government, keeping each other in line. As for religon, I think it should be discouraged, the last thing the ship needs is an intra-ship war over religon. Most of the time should go into education and studying the target planet/system.

I also think that the generation ship should not have the aim of colonizing planets, rather using material from planets and asteroids to build space habitats and more generation ships to further colonize other systems.

The biggest problem on generation ships is the fact that the first generation may pass all of the tests with 100% grades. Their offspring, however, could be a mess that put the generation ship into a horrible position and when you are 30 years from Earth a problem like that could end with everyone dying.

To address what Talyn said, although it is a huge project, with enough public appeal it is possible. The problem is, that appeal won't come until we are 6 months away from an extinction event.

On board bioengineering/nanotechnology. It is most likely that this won't happen until next century or more and by that time technology will have changed drastically.

Within the next century or so a generational ship may not even be required.
