Just curious, now after trying it for some time, do you think is it worth the investment?

For me, definitely. However the applications are just trickling in and support for it is still limited. I think that will change once the Touch is released, at which point it should be at par with the Vive. Currently the Vive has the upper hand (two actually) with hand motion trackers.

I am super curious how's the depth perception involving planets? I.e. when you're 10000 km from Earth, does it actually pop up against the starry background? Do you have a feeling it's really there?

Not to answer for franktalor, but if it is accurate, it shouldn't "pop" against the background at all, since the parallax motion between one eye and the other is virtually zero compared to the scale of planets. In order to make the planet's "pop" would require an eye separation on the scale of hundreds or thousands of km, which would make the planets look toyishly small (which would actually be a neat effect). Maybe there will be options in future releases to increase or decrease eye separation.

In reality, you would have no depth perception when observing planets from space.

This already exists in SE now, use Shift-Mousewheel in stereoscopic view modes to change the stereobase.

YES !

I have played with a 24 inch monitor, and it still has a feeling for me like looking out a window, to see out side my house. Cant see much. Well, you are limited. But having an Oculus on wile playing its like you have stepped out side, to look around. You are out side.
That's the difference!

When in SE and you are looking down at a planet its like it is really in front of you. And you go down to it you realize the sure size of the planet, and its distance.

Buy the way is there a patch for the 1.3.0 for the DK2 ?

For those still waiting on VR support, there is a compromise that is actually pretty nice.

Download Virtual Desktop from Steam. Set the screen to Curved, the Screen size to 120°, screen distance to maximum and the background to black. Then run SE in full screen mode.

It pretty much fills your field of view with only minor distortions near the top and bottom of the screen. It isn't full 360° but the immersion is still pretty decent.
