Something odd in the Rigel system...

I was trying to see whether my old astrogation method through the galaxy still worked in the new version, and during this, came through the Rigel system. In reality, Rigel is a triple system, with Rigel A and B seperated by 2200 AU and Rigel B a spectroscopic binary itself. In version 0.96 of SE, however, something very odd happened at Rigel: it's still a triplet, and Rigel A is all good. Rigel B, however, has disappeared! But where, might you ask, are Rigel's to companions, then?

As it turns out, the two companions are of a rather scary nature: Black Holes! Rigel B is now a black hole of 12 Solar masses, circling the barycenter between Rigel A and it at 20 AU:

(Rigel A is just out of sight in the first pic; it's a rather powerful star and makes it hard to see anything else when it's in the image)

But this is not the most bizarre thing: the second black hole is really, really close to Rigel. Only 50 million km away. And Rigel is a big star, with not much gravity at the surface, so it makes me wonder if there'd be matter from Rigel slurped up by this Black Hole...

I occasionally stream at http://www.twitch.tv/magistermystax. Sometimes SE, sometimes other games.

This is not a bug, Rigel is still outside the Roche limit. Its shape should be distorted by the black hole, but this is not supported by SE so far.

So the engine put two black holes into a system known to have none... this is exactly the reason why I have StarProcBifurcation set to false happy

I am joking of course! I love that SE can modify catalogs procedurally. It's just my personal preference to use the bare catalog. wink
